Underlighting: Shading with white first

Let me first say this tip applies specifically to drawing onto Canson Mi-Teintes darker-than-white paper. When drawing a well-lit part of the picture, such as a flower petal facing the sun, I have found it is extremely beneficial to first draw a smooth layer of white onto the page, mimicking the tones of the eventual subject but just with the white color. Layer the white color more thickly in the part of the subject that's the most strongly lit by a light source. Then, do the actual of coloring of the subject (including its shadows) right onto the white "underpainting". By experimentation I learned this has the effect of causing the highlights to really "pop out" of the drawing! See URL for an image where I relied on this technique...

wow what a great gallery

Absolutely fantastic! Can't say which is best they're all so good, but I love Morgan. He's my fave on CM!

Thanks a lot for your comments on my oil pastel painting, 'Reflective World'. I really appreciate it. I'm actually working on another surreal pastel piece right now. I took a bit of a break from it to work on a memorial for someone, but I'll definitely be heading back to it and finishing it soon. I'm hoping to participate in gallery showing next year, and I'm hoping to have a surreal pastel series complete by then. :)

Yes I do. :3 It's http://artvibes.tumblr.co m And my personal blog is the one that started following you (Nomadic Robot) :3

You have a striking ability with the coloured pencils. All your pieces are just amazing.

Art is made to disturb. Science reassures. There is only one valuable thing in art: the thing you cannot explain. Georges Braque Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. Edgar Degas I This is what I hope to do.

I want to be able to make my dreams into pieces of art. I want to be an inspiration to others as well as myself. When Im older I want to take some classes in art therapy.
