Work on good pastel paper! I love both Wallis and Colourfix paper. Wallis is wonderful because you can put a watercolor wash on first to help define you shapes, then work with pastel on top. Colourfix is wonderful because you can start on a rich color, and your pastels react wonderfully to that background.
